– Finger joint trim is a paint-grade trim made of many short lengths of wood joined together by glue and special joints. Although it can be made of any type of wood, it is most commonly produced with pine.

– Finger joint trim can come in bare wood, or primed, and is typically finished with paint as the ‘finger joints’ are visible in the wood. Bare finger joint trim should be primed before painting to ensure that the finished coat adheres properly.

– MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a type of material produced using glue and wood fibers to make trim in an economical manner. It is exceptionally smooth finish makes it a fantastic option for painting.

– MDF Trim is sold with a primer coat applied at the factory. MDF trim that is fully painted and ready for installation is available, however care must be taken to not damage this factory finish while transporting and installing.

– MDF Trim is not the most durable option. It is not suitable for high moisture areas, although special care in finishing can minimize swelling.

– Oak trim is durable and classically beautiful and can be finished with just a simple clear coat, or stained to a desired colour. However Oak Trim is more difficult to work with, and has a premium price compared to other options. Oak is not meant to be painted.

– Pine (clear or knotty) trim has dipped in popularity in recent years, however it remains a classic feel, especially when stained and finished with a clear coat. Its expense has gone up in recent years.

– Mahogany trim was once the industry standard. This trim is beautiful and durable but the price has risen considerably recently. It is commonly sought for a renovation or matching existing trim not new projects.

– Cedar trim is a wonderful addition to any outdoor space or anywhere that moisture is a concern. It is easy to work with, however the cost is higher than other types of trim. Cedar trim generally needs to be clear and free of knots in order to be machined successfully. There are limited trim profiles available in Cedar.

– Maple and Cherry trim are premium products. They are hard woods with a tight grain, and finish exceptionally well. They can be stained or painted, although we do not recommend painting these high end trims.

– PVC trim or Vinyl trim can be a great finishing touch to the outside of your home. It is not commonly used inside due to the higher cost of the material. However PVC trim can be beneficial when used inside bathrooms and laundry rooms or other areas with high exposure to moisture. Both of these materials can be used to make curved/flexible trims.

– Polyurethane architectural trim is a premium engineered product. It is extremely easy to work with, and is surprisingly durable. It is pre-primed at the factory and is applied to the wall using a combination of adhesive, and fasteners does not expand and contract at the same rate as wood.

– Exotic wood trims such as Alder, Walnut, Zebrawood, etc. can be a beautiful addition to your home. These come with a proportionally large price tag but they can make a home into a unique work of art.
