Siding Terminology

Batten – Strips of wood that seal joints by connecting siding boards.
Caulk – A waterproof sealant or filler.
Channel The portion of a siding board that allows the next piece to be inserted.
Flashing – Pieces of metal installed around openings, such as windows and doors, to prevent water from seeping in.
Head Flashing – Protects vertical siding by deflecting water away from the top of the boards.
Furring Strip (Strapping) – Wooden strips attached to the outside of the home (after the wrapping process) to which the siding is attached.
Lap – The portion of each board that overlaps the previous to hide nails.
Plumb/ Square – The perfect levelness of vertical and horizontal objects, respectively.
