DESIGN YOUR SHED

STEP 4

DESIGN YOUR SHED

STEP 4

What type of foundation should I use?
Most shed foundations consist of a framed floor raised off the ground. This floor is framed with 2×6 or 2×8 (depending on the span) and sheathed with a tongue and grooved spruce or OSB plywood. You can also opt to go with a slab on grade foundation; however, this requires involving an engineer to size out the slab. You also need to get a building permit.

Should I use 2×4 or 2×6 studs when framing walls?
When framing your shed, you can use 2×4 or 2×6 lumber. Using 2×6 makes walls stronger, but it is more expensive than using 2×4’s. Regardless of the stud size, you should frame them at 16” OC.

Windows and Doors – How many? What size? Location?
Determine how many windows and doors you would like.
Determine what size you would like the openings to be.
Determine where you would like to locate your window(s) and door(s).

What style roof do I want?
Determine if you would prefer a gable roof (sloped 2 sides) or a hip/cottage roof (sloped 4 sides).
Determine if you’d like any ceiling details incorporated in your roof design. Different options would include a vaulted ceiling, a coffered ceiling, or a tray ceiling.
Determine whether you would like a hand-cut roof (rafters) or trusses.

  • If building a 2-storey shed, confirm if you would like attic trusses.
  • See Select Your Materials for the pros and cons of the 2 options.

Exterior Claddings

Which roof cladding would you like – steel roof or shingles?

  • See Select Materials for the pros and cons of each option.

Which exterior wall cladding should I use – siding (vinyl, wood, cement board, steel, aluminum), stone, brick, or stucco?

  • See Select Your Materials for the pros and cons of each option.
  • Keep in mind you can use multiple claddings (e.g. stone skirt combined with siding).

Which soffit/fascia should I use – aluminum, vinyl, or wood?
